  • OPAL

At River Primary we are invested in the OPAL Programme (Outdoor Play and Learning) to improve opportunities for physical activity, resilience, creativity, curiosity and happiness at lunchtimes through play. OPAL is based on the idea that, as well as learning through good teaching, children also learn when they play. As 20% of their time in school is playtime, we want to make sure that this amount of time (equivalent to 1.4 years of primary school) is as good as possible. An OPAL approach promotes a more inclusive play environment in which all children can feel comfortable to express themselves.

Have a look at some of the OPAL zones we have developed across our school site. There are lots of opportunities for children to use their imagination, be creative or get messy!

OPAL play is absolutely brilliant.Great to see a variety of activities catering to all the different needs and interests of all the children across the age ranges. All the children were engaged and playing really well. My kids love it!

    • Really great experience seeing how much the children enjoy the freedom and multitude of equipment. I love how it also allows the children from different age groups the chance to interact. Brilliant work!
