River Primary School
This term we will introduce children to tenths and hundredths using both the partitioning structure and ideas of place value. This will include learning that:
1. When one is divided into ten equal parts, each part is one tenth of the whole and when one is divided into one hundred equal parts, each part is one hundredth of the whole.
2. Tenths and hundredths can be expressed as decimal fractions; the number written ‘0.1’ is one tenth and '0.01' is one hundredth.
3. We can count in tenths and hundredths up to and beyond one.
4. Numbers with tenths and hundredths can be rounded to the nearest whole number by examining the value of the tenths digit.
Our next unit will be about co-ordinates. We will learn to:
1 | Give directions from one position to another on a grid |
2 | Move objects including polygons on a grid according to directions |
3 | Describe translations of polygons drawn on a square grid |
4 | Mark the position of points specified by coordinates in the first quadrant of a coordinate grid, and write coordinates for already-marked points |
5 | Draw polygons specified by coordinates in the first quadrant |
6 | Translate polygons in the first quadrant |
Our third unit will be about the symmetry of shapes. We will learn how to:
1 | Complete a symmetrical pattern |
2 | Compose symmetrical shapes from two congruent shapes |
3 | Investigate lines of symmetry in 2D shapes by folding paper shape cut-outs |
4 | Find lines of symmetry in 2D shapes using a mirror |
5 | Reflect polygons in a line of symmetry |
6 | Reflect polygons that are dissected by a line of symmetry |
Finally, our last unit is about time. We will be learning how to:
Alongside our maths units for term 6. We will be working hard to consolidate and develop our multiplication skills for all times table facts up to 12 x 12.
