    Maths in Term 6

This term we will introduce children to tenths and hundredths using both the partitioning structure and ideas of place value. This will include learning that:

    1. When one is divided into ten equal parts, each part is one tenth of the whole and when one is divided into one hundred equal parts, each part is one hundredth of the whole.

    2. Tenths and hundredths can be expressed as decimal fractions; the number written ‘0.1’ is one tenth and '0.01' is one hundredth.

    3. We can count in tenths and hundredths up to and beyond one.

    4. Numbers with tenths and hundredths can be rounded to the nearest whole number by examining the value of the tenths digit.

Our next unit will be about co-ordinates. We will learn to:

1Give directions from one position to another on a grid
2Move objects including polygons on a grid according to directions
3Describe translations of polygons drawn on a square grid
4Mark the position of points specified by coordinates in the first quadrant of a coordinate grid, and write coordinates for already-marked points
5Draw polygons specified by coordinates in the first quadrant
6Translate polygons in the first quadrant

Our third unit will be about the symmetry of shapes. We will learn how to:

    1Complete a symmetrical pattern
2Compose symmetrical shapes from two congruent shapes
3Investigate lines of symmetry in 2D shapes by folding paper shape cut-outs
4Find lines of symmetry in 2D shapes using a mirror
5Reflect polygons in a line of symmetry
6Reflect polygons that are dissected by a line of symmetry

Finally, our last unit is about time. We will be learning how to:

    • read, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12- and 24-hour clocks
    • solve problems involving converting from hours to minutes; minutes to seconds; years to months; weeks to days.

Alongside our maths units for term 6. We will be working hard to consolidate and develop our multiplication skills for all times table facts up to 12 x 12.

What can parents do to support learning at home?

    • Ensure children are secure with their times table knowledge up to 12x12. This supports understanding in so many areas of maths.
    • Practise quick recall of number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 - the more confident they are with this, the better!
    • Help children to secure their written methods of calculation (please follow the schools calculation policy for this).
    • Help children to recognise the value of numbers up to 10,000 - what is the value of the digit 5 in 4567?
    • Ensure children can explain how they know their answers. I know this because... This shows...
