Intent

Our school believes it is important for our children to have a good foundation in the French language. This acts as a platform for learning in secondary education and improves local employment opportunities in the future.

At River Primary School, we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils and we provide opportunities for all children to develop their skills by providing an irresistible primary language experience.  The aim of our French curriculum is to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world, leading them to value the importance of learning about other cultures and their languages. We endeavour to broaden pupils’ horizons and build their cultural capital through using the study of the French language as an opening to learning about aspects of French culture. Through the study of the French language, we seek to inspire pupils with the range of opportunities that learning languages presents in the world of work.

French lessons provide an excellent opportunity to study language structures, morphology and etymology, drawing comparisons with the English language. This enriches pupils’ understanding of both languages. We aim to inspire and generate a love of languages and a thirst for learning through relevant learning experiences and practical activity wherever possible. By developing a love of language through learning and valuing its importance in a diverse society, as well as our locality to France, we hope to start pupils on the route of learning a variety of languages as they get older, as well as preparing them effectively for further language learning in Key Stage 3.

We use a website called Language Angels to help us with our French learning.

You can also access the 'Home School' area of the website using the login details below. That way, you can help your child to learn French at home too!
