River Primary School
In term 4, we will be introducing the children to column addition and subtraction, building on their exisiting understanding of number bonds to ten, place value and mental methods. We will be encouraging the children to use accurate mathematical vocabulary when learning and pratising the methods to ensure they understand the maths behind them.
We will continue to use a range of manipulatives and representations and be exploring applying the written methods of addition and subtraction to problem-solving and reasoning contexts.
We will also be emphasising when these written methods are efficient to use and when one of the mental methods we have practised would be more appropriate.
We will also be learning about the 2, 4 and 8 times tables and the relationship between them.
Lessons will continue to contain a mixture of fluency, problem-solving and mathematical reasoning and make explicit links to real-life contexts.
We will practise our focus Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) daily along with other basic maths facts such as doubles to 5 and 10, number bonds to 5, 10 and 20 and revisit the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Our focus KIRF for this term is:
I know multiplication and division facts for the 4 times table.
In term 5, we will be focusing on fractions. We will begin by looking at the part-whole relationship in a variety of contexts and how the whole can be divided into equal and unequal parts. We will then look at how the relative size of these parts can be compared and how if the size of one equal part and the number of equal parts is known, the size of the whole can be worked out.
As always, we will be encouraging the children to use accurate mathematical vocabulary in their learning including the words numerator and denominator when introducing the childen to fraction notation. We will look at unit fractions (fractions where the numerator is 1) and comparing these by looking at the denominator.
We will continue to use a range of manipulatives and representations to introduce, practise and consoldiate learning.
