Intent

At River Primary School, our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum aims to equip our children with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, responsible, fulfilling and balanced lives. Our curriculum reinforces our school values: Teamwork, Health, Responsibility, Integrity, Value everyone and Empathy. Through the curriculum, we celebrate children’s individuality and children are given opportunities to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes in society. We endeavour to broaden their horizons through learning about wider society and raising aspirations for how they can contribute to it both now and in the future.

Our curriculum aims to help children understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up, in addition to reflecting and debating on current local, national and global issues. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We aim to prepare children to be global citizens now and in their future roles within a global community.

Our PSHE curriculum aims to incorporate the understanding of Relationships and Sex Education, which enables children to explore the complexity of the relationships they have now and to know how to be safe, preparing them to understand and develop healthy relationships in their future lives.

The personal, social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of our children permeates every aspect of the school day. As well as weekly PSHE lessons, children will explore aspects of PSHE across the curriculum, particularly in English, RE, Art, Geography, History and PE.  Our behaviour policy reflects our values and the aims of our PSHE curriculum.

Learning about British values forms a key part of our PSHE curriculum, with children learning about Democracy, The rule of law, Individual liberty and Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.  Children across the school experience the process of democracy in school through the election and membership opportunities provided by school council, eco-council, sports and house ambassadors (Y6) and school sports team.
